The Real Palace of Valencia in the medieval epoch
2007
The Real palace [palau del Real] of Valencia was demolished in 1810 by order of the local authorities facing the menace of the French imperial army, but it had been until then one of the major historical buildings, comparable with other royal residences in capital cities of the Crown of Aragon. Archaelogical evidence, historical plans and views and, above all, abundant although scattered documentary sources allow us to retrace the main steps of its history, building and uses in the context of gothic architecture and to compare it with some other courts established in the Crown of Aragon and in Western Europe in 14th and 15th centuries. During this period, the Real was the scene of magnifice…
2011
Valencian architecture around 1400 entered in a period of innovation departing from ancient, early Christian, Islamic and Jewish traditions. Recent research has concentrated mainly on technical developments and on the study of sources, contracts in particular, but some aspects concerning transmission of practical knowledge and patrons¿ attitudes towards innovation and tradition remain still open to further study. This article analyzes the later question and tries to explain patron¿s agency either in new buildings and restoration of older ones. Particular attention is given to values and categories applied to judge new buildings and to praise architects¿ work taking advantage of the richness…

2016
This essay studies the technical education of master masons in Valencia in the period 1370-1520. Previous research on this topic and comparative studies are considered in order to frame a number of cases of study, well documented by written sources. These include training contracts for apprenticeship, labour agreements, accounting records of public works, registrations of foreigners as Valencian citizens, statutes of 15th century building trades and any other evidence about mobility of master builders and the transmission of technical knowledge in architecture. Dealing with several problems of interpretation of these archival records, this paper helps to understand architectural changes in …
A tale of two palaces and a city: Valencia, 1238-1460
2013
Aunque ambos palacio…
LA IMAGEN CONSTRUIDA DEL PODER REAL EN LA CORONA DE ARAGÓN (SIGLOS XIII-XV): CASAS, CEREMONIAL Y MAGNIFICENCIA
2007
Command and obedience do not exist without emotional forms of shaping control. This is especially notable in the Kingdom of Aragon, since the heterogeneity of its territories was not only unified through the titles of the royal family, but the ceremonials, the aesthetic simplicity and balance of the buildings formed the charismatic ostentation of a command that demonstrated its power through the prizes seized from the enemy, the stately architectural forms and the civil rites of recognition.
